New Year’s Resolution – Reward Yourself With Tranquility Massage

Hands Happy New Year 2012 Tranquility Massage

Happy New Year!

As the New Year approaches we are reminded another year has passed, and many people resolve to make positive changes in the coming year: lose weight, break a bad habit, stop smoking, etc. Even positive changes can create stress, which makes sticking to your resolutions more difficult. Massage therapy is a fantastic way to combat the physical and mental stresses of some of these life changes, and is also an effective way to reinforce and reward positive accomplishments in the same way. Many of our clients rely on weekly massage therapy sessions to maintain their health and sanity, and they come from all walks of life. Here are a few of their stories.

Rachael and Emily, a very special mother-daughter pair of clients in Fullerton, utilize our in-home massage therapy service to share downtime after a busy week operating their business. Both are extremely busy working long hours during the week (including weekends), and find their performance suffers when they become too tense and overloaded. Their working environment is very demanding and, at times, adversarial. “Sometimes it’s like the massages are the only times we can stand to be in the same room with each other”, says Emily. Rachael enjoys a more relaxing Swedish massage whereas Emily prefers deep tissue work to work out the knots in her back and shoulders. On occasion, they’ll have Tranquility Massage provide chair massage at their office when things are particularly stressful, or to celebrate the completion of a particularly difficult job.

This year, we were contacted by a couple in Riverside who now schedule weekly couples massage to unwind and rejuvenate. Matt is a contractor, and Teresa is busy at home with their children and elderly father. Both enjoy massage therapy, but cannot easily find time to leave the home to enjoy it together. Their situation requires one be available to watch kids while the other receives their massage, so we utilize our back-to-back couples massage. It works out better at night for them, and Matt can roll right off the massage table and in to bed for a great night’s sleep.

Perhaps the best example of massage-as-a-reward is Carl from Rancho Cucamonga. Carl loves massage therapy, but made a resolution at the beginning of 2011 to cut back on expenses and save more for retirement. He had a membership with a prominent massage therapy outlet, but found he didn’t always get the massages when they were available, and didn’t want to leave the house to get them for fear of being tempted to spend money on other things while he was out. He set-up milestones for his savings goals and cut out many of his expenses, but allowed himself an in-home massage when each milestone was reached. We don’t know what his goals are, but Carl enjoyed 8 in-home massage therapy sessions in 2011. Congratulations Carl!

As 2012 looms and you decide to face the stress and anxiety of some tough New Year’s resolutions, consider giving our in-home massage therapy a try. Our massage therapists come to you when your schedule permits, and our rates are very often less than you’d pay at a walk-in spa. You’ll enjoy a personalized massage from a professional massage therapist who will be devoted entirely to your massage, on your terms and on your turf, without the worry of having to face traffic afterwards. You’ll find facing those difficult resolutions a much more relaxing and rewarding prospect ion 2012!

2011 In Review at Tranquility Massage

Tranquility Massage hands 2011

2011 In Review

As part of our year-end massage performance evaluation, we re-visit various events that occurred throughout the year so we can improve and plan for the next. With all it’s economic turmoil, 2011 has been a good year for massage therapy, and Tranquility Massage has undergone growth in some expected and unexpected ways. In both cases, its always wise to review your successes (and, yes, failures) to realize the best you can be. In keeping with this sometimes painful management exercise, we would like to reflect on the highlights of 2011.

Couples massage therapy by Tranquility Massage

Couples Massage

Couple’s massage was a year-round hit. Normally most popular during the spring and summer months, our couple’s massage business remained very popular throughout the year – particularly in vacation and resort spots such as Anaheim, Newport Beach, Dana Point, Laguna Beach, Long Beach, and several other spots in Orange and Los Angeles Counties. Much of this was at hotels and inns in these areas, and many clients were either new or returning from out of town. Couple’s massage is a superb way to enjoy togetherness when vacationing, but it wasn’t only vacations these travelers were on. Many were here on business or for personal non-vacation reasons. One thing’s for sure – 2011 didn’t put a damper on the desire for togetherness!

Chair massage by Tranquility Massage therapist

Office Chair Massage

Our chair massage services were particularly in demand this year, both for conventions and other business related events, and for regular business wellness programs as well. Anaheim, Irvine, and Los Angeles were the top performers in these areas, and we even got requests for our chair massage therapy services at some types of businesses we hadn’t expected. Chair massage is particularly effective for administering performance boosting massage therapy in professional situations where a table massage may not be feasible. On the convention side, vendors at several events this year utilized Tranquility Massage to capture a larger number of visitors at their exhibits, and we even had a speaker at one week-long seminar in Anaheim utilize Tranquility Massage’s in-room hotel massage therapy service to keep him conditioned for his marathon presentation.

During the summer vacation months, we had a very large demand for our poolside massage therapy services for various professional and family events. Several in Yorba Linda, Coto de Caza, Huntington Beach, Balboa, and one right on the beach in Dana Point. Tranquility Massage usually sets up a nice shady tent with suitable relaxing music (some like Hawaiian, others reggae – it’s all client’s preference) and a full massage table – often two or more depending on the size of the event. Clients merely hop on in their suits, enjoy a relaxing massage in a resort setting and get their suntan oil or sunscreen applied all at once. Need more after a dip in the pool? No problem! Massage therapists are a definite hit at these types of events, and we always look forward to adding to the fun and enjoyment.

Sports Massage Therapy

Our sports massage therapy and pregnancy massage therapy services also saw spikes in the summer months, particularly in Rancho Cucamonga, Riverside, Irvine, Mission Viejo, and Yorba Linda. Sports massage therapy is normally utilized by professional athletes for maintaining peak physical conditioning and athletic performance, but it also sees a large following with very athletic people from all walks of life. From professional football and baseball players, to surfers, triathletes, and even martial arts instructors, Tranquility Massage has been fortunate to work with wide variety of clients in this area this year. Pregnancy massage therapy was also up this year, due in large part to referrals from past clients to newly expecting family members – with one client in Laguna Hills returning with her second pregnancy! Its definitely good to see that pregnancies and interest in healthy moms and babies is in good standing.

We’ve added new massage therapists in Riverside, Corona, Rancho Cucamonga, San Dimas, and several other spots in Los Angeles and Riverside counties to better serve clients in those areas. These therapists are professionals in various modalities ranging from Swedish and deep tissue massage therapy to more specialized pregnancy massage and medical massage therapy, and all are dedicated to providing our clients with the utmost in relaxing, rejuvenating, and rewarding mobile massage therapy. We’re excited and grateful to have them working with us!

As we reflect on 2011 and plan for 2012, we would also like to thank all of our clients, suppliers, staff, and massage therapists for all of your professionalism, effort, and support, and we look forward to continuing our growth and YOUR health in the New Year!

Tranquility Massage Brings Convenience to Irvine

Tranquility Massage in Irvine

Irvine is unique among Orange County communities. With it’s active and academic population fueling a strong business community, Irvine maintains a plethora of industrial and corporate centers, beautiful gated communities, and centralized shopping districts in one of the most beautifully manicured settings in Orange County. As a master planned city, Irvine’s business, shopping, and residential areas are well segregated which leave it’s residential areas free of unsightly industrial complexes, and it’s businesses free to conduct business without upsetting their residential neighbors. However, the layout can make trips to local shopping centers a long and crowded affair.

Many of our residential massage clients in Irvine cite convenience as theprimary reason they originally tried Tranquility Massage. A regular client in the upscale Northgate community pointed out that it takes her up to 45 minutes to leave her home and community to drive to the local Irvine massage spa and find a parking space. Waiting her turn for a massage may take up to 15 minutes more. One time at the spa she said she wanted an extra 30 minutes for her deep tissue massage, but was told she would have to make another appointment – somewhat frustrating.

The ironic part is that her home is beautifully decorated, and she keeps a large variety of tropical house plants around her home – a perfect setting for her own personal massage spa. Tranquility Massage enables her to enjoy personalized and professional massage therapy without leaving this beautiful setting. In addition, she loves music with a classical or ambient flavor, and can leave it playing during and after her massage. She also enjoys aromatherapy which lingers in her home well after the massage is complete, allowing her to extend her physical and mental relaxation by keeping the entire spa experience at home. She loves the service so much, she’s created her own personal jungle where she has her massage therapy!

We have two massage therapy clients in the beautiful Turtle Rock community in southern Irvine (one who enjoys sports massage therapy after his run through Turtle Rock trail), three that live in the beautiful Marquee Park Place towers, and many living in apartment communities throughout Irvine. Each has shared their delight at saving an hour or more away from their busy lives while still enjoying the healthful and relaxing benefits of massage therapy.

Tranquility Massage has several professional massage therapists that serve the Irvine area. Some specialize in specific types of massage therapy such as pregnancy massage or geriatric massage, others in sports massage therapy and deep tissue massage. All of them share a devotion to providing the utmost in massage therapy and convenience. Just the same, an important part of our business is ensuring our clients received service they were enthralled with. We frequently hear how much they enjoy getting professional massage therapy at home, often for less than they would pay at a spa. However, Irvine massage clients almost always tell us how wonderful it is to enjoy relaxing right at home and having time to do more. Stories like theirs are what Tranquility Massage is all about.

Yorba Linda Residents Live Graciously Through Massage

Our massage therapists have been busy in Yorba Linda through July and August thus far. There has been a lot of interest in our summertime poolside massage therapy service for several family gatherings, and one new client who merely enjoys getting his sports therapy massage poolside, sometimes before beginning an intense triathlon training swim.

One thing about Yorba Linda is the presence of so many beautiful homes and estates – many with very healthy outdoor living spaces equipped with beautiful pools, patios, and landscaping. These areas are perfect for outdoor relaxation and rejuvenation, and massage therapy is most effective in these natural settings. When a client has the benefit of such an environment, we strongly recommend outdoor massage in the summertime or anytime the weather permits! Higher oxygen levels, the relaxing sounds of the outdoors, and a deeper connection with nature all enhance the massage experience.

Not all Yorba Linda clients have the benefit of such an environment, which doesn’t diminish the benefit of massage therapy one bit. One client, living in a small but attractive apartment complex, is quite allergic to pollens and dusts and prefers her massage indoors where she maintains a purified air environment. She manages beautifully to enjoy the sounds of nature by using her favorite environmental music as well as aromatherapy to bring nature indoors for her massage.

Aside from the beautiful outdoor living areas Yorba Linda residents are blessed with, many engage in parties and entertaining guests from home. We were pleased to have two massage therapists provide table massage services to one bridal shower and two separate birthdays as well.

The bridal shower was interesting because one therapist was indoors and the other was out by the pool, so guests had a choice of either indoor or outdoor massage. By the way, our gift to the bride was a complimentary couple’s massage after their honeymoon was over. She told us they may never use it because they plan on making the honeymoon last forever! Now that really would be ‘living graciously’!

Irvine Embraces Mobile Massage Therapists

Of all the communities Tranquility Massage Serves, Irvine is quite unique. Irvine is a master planned community in it’s entirety with a rich history of agriculture, education, business, industry, and cultural diversity. As a master planned city, it consists of very carefully (and beautifully!) orchestrated and segregated housing communities, shopping centers, and business districts. The ‘up’ side to all this is the appearance of these areas is beautifully consistent. There are no ‘unsightly’ industrial areas in view (or earshot) of the residences, businesses are free to engage in industrial activities without irritating the residents, and shopping centers enjoy a high concentration of shoppers.

The ‘down’ side is that venturing out from a home deep in a beautiful gated community to drive across town to a crowded shopping center is likely to be a stressful and inconvenient affair. If you work in Irvine, just think about lunchtime there and you get the idea. For a relaxing and rejuvenating massage, it’s a completely counterproductive effort. As a mobile massage therapy service, we’re accustomed to navigating the streets and communities of Irvine. Doing so after massage therapy is not the most effective way to relax and/or make productive use of time, and it certainly isn’t conducive to experiencing the highest quality massage possible.

That’s why Irvine is a terrific example of how our mobile massage therapists really enhance the massage experience for Irvine residents. The negative experiences of leaving home, driving, waiting, and ‘snapping-out’ of deep relaxation to brave all that to get back home is completely eliminated, leaving the client to remain at home in a blissful, relaxed state – even to fall asleep if one chooses! Many of our Irvine clients remark how glad they are they don’t have to fight crowds and cars after their massage is complete.

Something we haven’t heard before came from a relatively new client living in an apartment community by the Irvine Spectrum. She’s an active professional that leads a very busy social life after hours. She gets weekly deep tissue massage therapy, usually right after work, “so she can have more time to party and relax with her friends when they go clubbing”. In fact, she’ll occasionally have a friend over for a couple’s massage before they take off to Los Angeles to meet up with friends for the weekend.

Another Irvine client operates a financial planning service from her home and finds it difficult to find the time to break away from her work, so she gets an in-home Swedish massage for herself to take the edge off of her day. She even gives our massage gift certificates to her clients when they achieve important financial goals.

Businesses throughout Irvine use our chair massage services to bring relaxation and wellbeing into the workplace through regular on-site massage therapy, health fairs, and special corporate events across industries ranging from legal and financial to video post-production, marketing, and manufacturing. Irvine housing communities use our poolside massage service for summer community events. As far as Orange County communities go, few utilize such a wide array of our massage therapy services as Irvine does, and we’re very grateful to be a part of Irvine’s high quality of life.

Sports Massage Solves Surfer’s Strain

We got a call from a competition surfer from Huntington Beach earlier this week, looking for sports massage therapy. He was practicing down at the Wedge in Newport Beach and managed to tweak a muscle in his lower back. After seeing some of the maneuvers these guys pull off, it’s easy to see how. Surfing is a demanding sport, with unique extremes. Calm, tranquil, and ‘laid-back’ one minute; rough, unpredictable, and physically demanding the next – often with little warning in between.

In addition, Surfers will spend long periods of time partially submerged in water that is substantially cooler than body temperature, which can lead to decreased blood circulation when there’s a crucial need for it – such as dropping in on a good wave. Another counter-intuitive factor is dehydration. It’s hard to think of an ocean as a desert, but that’s exactly what it is – an ocean of SALT water. With the blazing sun beating down and difficult access to drinkable water (AND the fact surfers are dripping wet which masks sweat), it’s way too easy for dehydration to go unnoticed.

Surfers know the importance of warm-ups and stretching, but are also famous for toughing-out their injuries. In this surfer’s case, a bad drop-in ended up in a strain of the quadratus lumborum (an important muscle in the lower back that helps twist the upper torso). The strain luckily wasn’t severe, but it was definitely tight. Sports massage therapy is generally not appropriate for application where a soft tissue injury is recent, Accordingly, he received a sports massage to help condition his non-injured muscles for future surfing, with a deep tissue/Swedish massage therapy modification to that quadratus lumborum to help reduce the swelling and restore range of motion.

One thing that amazes many of our clients is a massage therapist’s ability to ‘read’ the muscles of the body and find exactly where the strain is without much guidance from the client. Often times the massage therapist can see what areas of the body need careful attention merely by observing the way a client is standing, sitting, or lying. It’s also important to note that the therapist will only apply therapies that are comfortable for the client and appropriate for the condition.

Summer Massage Health: Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!

During summertime activities, your muscles are working overtime under extreme conditions that can lead to aches, pains, and even serious injury from dehydration, muscle adhesions, and toxins stored within muscle tissue. To help avoid these summer fun-killers, start with the basics – hydrate before, during, and after physical activities. How does massage therapy fit in? Read on…

Tranquility Massage receives many calls from people who have injured themselves during casual physical efforts as well as extreme sporting – usually during colder weather when blood circulation is typically impaired. While massage therapy is ideal for preventing major muscular injuries, it may be too late after the injury has already occurred. One of the most important things you can do to prevent injury is to hydrate.

As you play hard, the cells in your muscles produce metabolic wastes that can accumulate in muscle tissue. Without sufficient water to flush away those wastes, they can accumulate within the muscle tissue itself, leading to decreased flexibility and range of motion – prime conditions for injury. To help prevent the accumulation of those wastes, drink water or your favorite sports drink (fortified with essential electrolytes such as sodium and potassium) at least 30 minutes prior to engaging in summer activities. Maintain your hydration level during your summer activity by continuing to drink to replace what you lose through metabolism and perspiration, and continue to drink afterward as your heart rate and body temperature return to normal. Always drink an amount you’re comfortable with – never more. Also, don’t forget to have a restroom nearby!

Massage therapy prior to intense physical activity actually increases flushing of these metabolic wastes from muscle tissue. The massage therapist will apply a number of massage therapies to various muscle groups that can help avoid the accumulation of these toxins. Typically, 60 to 90 minutes of full-body sports therapy massage is most beneficial for those that regularly engage in intense physical activity. However, as little as 30 minutes of deep tissue massage therapy can provide enough conditioning to be a benefit – particularly if the activity involves lots of walking and standing (think a day at a theme park).

So remember, if you’ve got a day of fun in the sun in your future, stay hydrated to help flush those toxins and keep your muscles ready for action! For the most efficient and effective (and convenient!) way to flush those toxins, give Tranquility Massage mobile massage therapists a call. We’re where you need us most!

Medical Massage Therapy During The Holidays

Medical Massage Therapy from Tranquility Massage Mobile Massage Therapy

Medical Massage Therapy

I’ve seen an increase in the number of inquiries we’re receiving about our medical massage therapy services of late, and although I’m glad for the interest, I’ve been just as puzzled about the reasons why. Medical massage is typically administered under the guidance of a doctor for medically related conditions ranging from light muscular trauma to more clinical conditions such as Parkinson’s disease.

Normally, patients under a doctor’s care seek medical massage therapy at the suggestion of their doctor. However, many are seeking massage therapy for relief from the symptoms of their conditions without necessarily needing medical massage therapy.

One of the answers became apparent recently. As the weather gets colder, our bodies naturally react by constricting blood vessels to minimize heat loss through the extremities. This can lead to all kinds of muscular aches and pains in the feet and arms which exacerbates discomfort levels in a wide variety of people suffering from different medical conditions. Although I’m fortunate to be in excellent health, my feet started aching toward the latter half of last month when the cold and rainy weather graced our normally sunny shores.

Massage therapy is a natural circulation enhancer that ALSO helps the muscles and the lymph system purge toxins that otherwise lead to decreased energy levels and increased discomfort in cold weather. Although I haven’t researched the matter, I strongly suspect that cold weather aches and pains are one of the reasons for classic Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Thinking about it, that would make a good research project that I’ll post about later on.

Meanwhile, medical massage seekers don’t always need medical massage per se. Again, medical massage is administered in strict accordance with a doctor’s prescription, where any non-medical massage therapy can be utilized to achieve relief from a wide variety of symptoms that are a consequence of a medical condition. For example, Parkinson’s sufferers can enjoy many benefits such as improved range of motion, muscle loosening and relaxation, and improved stability and mobility to name a few, all with a classical and gently administered Swedish massage. Persons suffering from diabetes can enjoy improved circulation in the extremities with either Swedish massage, a comfortable deep tissue massage, Myofascial release, or any of a number of other massage therapies.

When we receive an inquiry for medical massage, we typically ask what medical condition is being treated and who the physician is. This frequently causes confusion when the client is taken aback by the question (by the way – if this has happened to you we DEEPLY apologize!). However, that reaction typically indicates to us that the client is really seeking relief from the symptoms of a medical condition and not treatment for the condition itself.

After we get the proper understanding of the client’s needs, we can recommend an appropriate massage therapy to bring the client the most effective relief. If that turns out to be medical massage, we will work carefully with your doctor to administer only the massage therapy prescribed.

Which leads to another point… If we are administering medical massage according to a doctor’s prescription, we MUST adhere strictly to his or her prescription. Clients undergoing medical massage therapy will frequently request we treat other areas of the body. Unfortunately, medical massage – of all massage therapies – is strictly administered, and we cannot deviate from the doctor’s prescription of treatment under any circumstances (we LOVE to massage, but doing so outside the scope of the prescription can cause more harm than good).

Therefore, if you are suffering from a medical condition that is bringing you discomfort or dysfunction, medical massage may be an appropriate therapy – provided it is prescribed by a doctor. If not, there are a multitude of other non-medical massage therapies that may bring effective relief for the symptoms of your condition. If you are considering massage therapy to help relieve a medical condition, be sure to ask your doctor of medical massage (massage requiring a prescription) is required in your case, or if any massage therapy you find preferable is acceptable.

As always, if a medical condition is involved, discuss any massage therapy you may be considering with your doctor FIRST, and ALWAYS adhere to his or her guidance when considering massage therapy.

…And of course, DO CALL if you have any questions we can answer!
